The transition to the era of the WEB 2.0 heralded a change in the structure of the Web, with perhaps the most important development, the interaction and the spread of Social Networks. Today’s users, especially young people using the internet, not only seek knowledge (e-learning) but they are also involved in the creation of content (wikis), they comment (Forum, Blogs, Micro-Blogs), and network (Social Networking) with people sharing common academic , research or professional interests, they cooperate (Collaborative Networks), are trained by distance (e-learning) or in combination with traditional learning (Blended Learning),and are watching interesting online lectures and webinars.

Extremely important is also the impact on 21st century education, in the way students approach learning and teachers instruction. And that is because the interaction between users is facilitated and thus the sharing of knowledge, is at a point where  we can now speak of an Integrated Learning Communication and Cooperation Environment (ILCCE); a stimulating learning and collaboration environment that highlights Universities as pillars of social and cultural development.

The aim of the project is to create an innovative multi-platform, learning, communication and collaboration environment that will enhance and support the current education procedures, Lifelong Learning, as well as Open Learning. Our university can certainly help create such pillars of learning and online collaboration, not only for the students of the institution, but also for the community. Users of our system are in fact, individuals and entities that wish to take advantage of the new trends in learning and communication through WEB 2.0 collaborative environments.

The multi-platform developed for TEI of Western Greece, encompasses all those features that make it essentially a superset of the current e-learning solutions: Asynchronous e-Learning, Synchronous real-time web conferencing, Collaborative Learning, Networking and Research through Web 2.0 technologies and applications, as well as interactive training material in the form of SCORM compliant Learning Objects.

The platform, and consequently the entire project, is available in the following link and include the following subsystems:

  • The Portal of the project with administration subsystem with single sign on capabilities and management of each subsystem
  • Asynchronous e-Learning Subsystem (Learning Management System – LMS and LCMS)
  • Synchronous e-Learning Platform (Web Conference / Virtual Classroom)
  • Social Learning / e-campus subsystem that supports Informal Learning inside and outside the institution
  • E-Portfolio subsystem for achievements and as an electronic curriculum for students and the liaison office of the educational institution
  • Surveys Engine subsystem to conduct on-line surveys and questionnaires for research purposes
